California Solar Initiative Rebate

The California Solar Initiative (CSI) is the solar rebate program for customers of three investor-owned utilities:

  1. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E)
  2. Southern California Edison (SCE)
  3. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E)
  4. Together with the rebate program for "New Solar Homes" and rebate programs offered through the dozens of publicly owned utilities in the state - the CSI is a key component of the state's "Go Solar California" campaign.

The CSI funds solar systems for existing homes and existing or new commercial buildings. The CSI also funds solar systems for agricultural, government, and various non-profit buildings. This program financially supports solar photovoltaic (PV) and other solar thermal technologies.

The rebate amount is calculated by equipment ratings and installation factors (geographic location, tilt and shading). The CSI offers solar customers different incentive levels based on the performance of their solar panels, including such factors as installation angle, tilt, and location rather than system capacity alone. This performance framework ensures that California is generating clean solar energy and rewarding systems that can provide maximum solar generation.

As part of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's $3.3 billion Million Solar Roofs enterprise, California has set a goal to create 3,000 megawatts of new, solar-produced electricity by 2017 - moving the state toward a cleaner energy future and helping lower the cost of solar systems for consumers. The CSI program is overseen by the California Public Utilities Commission and rebates are offered through the Program Administrators.
